Pete Santago

Dr. Pete Santago is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Wake Forest University. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University, and M.S. Degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech.

Prior to coming to the Department of Computer Science, I was a faculty member at the WFU School of Medicine for 24 years where I formed an engineering group in Radiology and founded the graduate program in Medical Engineering. That program successfully trained and graduated many students; however, there was a clear need to expand engineering to other areas in the medical center. This resulted in the formation of a Biomedical Engineering Department at WFU and a joint biomedical engineering graduate program with Virginia Tech (Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES)). I was one of the three co -founders (two at VT) and served as the associate director. During my time in the Medical School, my primary areas of expertise and interest were in biomedical informatics, pattern recognition, and machine learning with considerable experience in image/signal processing and analysis.

I came to the Department of Computer Science, where I served as department chair for 9 years. I now spend my time teaching, doing service work, and serving as the faculty director of WakerSpace, the WFU Makerspace. I continue to work with students on independent projects of various kinds, but I prefer to focus on stochastic processes, data mining, and computer organization.
