Securing the Connected World: From Privacy Compliance and Security to Online Safety by Dr. Long Cheng

Join us Monday, October 26 at 4:00 PM in Alumni Hall 286! Dr. Long Cheng from Clemson University will share his insight on topic entitled Securing the Connected World: From Privacy Compliance and Security to Online Safety.
Abstract
The connected world is characterized by the seamless integration of digital technologies
across both physical and online environments. This integration is most evident in the
proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which add connectivity to everyday
objects and enable automation in homes, workplaces, and cities. Connectivity also extends
to transportation, where autonomous vehicles rely on continuous data exchange with
sensors and cloud services to support perception, decision-making, and safe operation. In
addition, social media platforms are a key part of the connected world, supporting large-
scale information sharing and social interaction. However, this pervasive interconnectivity
also introduces new security and privacy risks. In this talk, I will present a series of our
research efforts aimed at addressing privacy compliance, security, and online safety
challenges in the connected world. I will begin by introducing our recent work on ensuring
privacy compliance in voice personal assistant systems. I will then discuss our ongoing
research on the security of autonomous and connected vehicles. Finally, I will present
several of our projects on safeguarding online users from harmful content.
